E&E Leader: Sungrow Raises the Bar for Battery Safety with Unprecedented Live Fire Test
By Willow Kennedy
In a bold move to address safety concerns in the energy storage industry, Sungrow, a leading provider of renewable energy solutions, recently conducted a groundbreaking live fire test of its PowerTitan energy storage system. The test, which was streamed to industry stakeholders, demonstrated the company’s commitment to transparency and safety in an increasingly critical sector of the renewable energy market.
A Fiery Demonstration of Safety
On May 23, at a third-party lab in China’s Henan Province, Sungrow intentionally set ablaze a full-size 20ft standalone PowerTitan Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The test, involving four of Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.752MWh integrated battery systems, was designed to simulate a real energy storage plant scenario and assess the system’s ability to contain thermal runaway without external fire control measures.
“This elevates our commitment to industry safety and transparency in commerce to a level few have achieved,” said Hank Wang, President of Sungrow Americas.
The results were impressive. During the test, explosion relief panels at the top of the unit activated automatically, venting the fire upward and preventing its spread to adjacent battery cabins and energy storage units. This successful demonstration of the PowerTitan’s fire safety capabilities at both the BLOCK and station control levels marks a significant milestone in battery energy storage safety.
